Long service & good conduct medal. Son of John & Martha East, of 44 Field Street, Bicester.

"Mr John East, of Field-street, Bicester, has received official information that his son, Sergt. Arthur East, of the Royal Army Medical Corps, died of wounds received in action on the night of May 15-16.
Sergt. East joined his regiment as long ago as 1898, when he went to Africa, taking part in the South African War. He was in the siege of Ladysmith. After the war he remained abroad, and was there when the present war broke out. He came to England in October, 1914, but was only allowed to stay a fortnight before being drafted to France. With the exception of two leaves he had been there ever since, and up to the time of meeting his death had been very lucky, not having received so much as a scratch.
Sergt. East was 40 years of age, and single. Two of his brothers are now serving in France, one having done nearly 21 years’ service." Bicester Advertiser 31/05/1918
