"Very general was the regret expressed when the news reached Hethe that Private Edwin Lane had been killed in action. Though so young, deceased was a very keen soldier, being one of the first to respond to the appeal. He had been in training since the end of last summer, and left for France this spring, being transferred from the Oxon and Bucks Light Infantry to the 1st Wilts. He was soon “in the thick of the fight,” being the first native of Hethe to lay down his life for King and Country." Bicester Herald 09/07/1915
