"News has been received that another Bicester soldier has fallen in action. – Pte. William Payne, of the Oxon and Bucks Light Infantry. The news, which is official, was conveyed to his mother, who resides in Banbury-Road. It appears that the lad (he was only 20 years of age), was returning from the trenches for a brief rest when a German shell burst near him, killing him instantaneously. He joined the army shortly after the outbreak of the war, as also did his father, and had recently been home, suffering from trench feet." Bicester Advertiser 07/12/1917
