"We regret to report that Mrs Chambers, of Hethe, has received official notification of the death from dysentery in Mesopotamia of her son, William T. Stevens, which took place on March 20, exactly a years from the day upon which he joined up.
Deceased was one of the first to join up under the Derby Scheme, but was at first rejected. He was called up again, and after being in training for some time was sent to India, from whence he was drafted to the Tigris front. He was here sent to hospital with feet defects, but wrote some very cheery letters home, his last dated Feb. 15, stating he was out of hospital and in touch with the Turks.
Illness, however, shortly afterwards intervened, and within a little over a month he passed away. Much sympathy is extended to his octogenarian mother, who has lost a good son at the age of 37 years." Bicester Herald 13/04/1917
