"News has been conveyed to Mr and Mrs Albert Varney, of Middleton Stoney, that their son, Pte. George W. Varney, D Company, 5th Batt. Oxford and Bucks Light Infantry, has been missing since the great advance last month.
Private Varney was one of the first of Middleton’s sons to respond to the call of the motherland. He has been in France for some time, and has a younger brother there also, but not in the same regiment. Before the war he was a keen footballer and formed one of the Middleton XI."
